Wet sidewalks, morning sun Fresh coffee, day's begun Whistle a bright tune, clouds roll away Happy just to start a new day. Birds singing, rainbow near Soft breezes, air so clear All that's behind, now looks far away Happy just to start a new day. Long nights without a star Old wounds that left their scar Past troubles seem so far Today and tomorrow- that's who we are. Blue skies and walking slow Trees shedding leaves below Yesterday's debt- there's no need to pay Happy just to start a new day. Melodies haunt my dreams and magical evening light Mysteries and surprises- chasing me through the night. The dark and all her secrets; the stars glow- then they die The moonlight bathes the heavens 'til morning opens the sky. Wet sidewalks, morning sun Fresh coffee, day's begun Whistle a bright tune, clouds roll away Happy just to start a new day.

Stay Near 04:00
Hand in hand we walked the road to its end Heart to heart, we sang, we laughed, best of friends I know you'll hear me if I call out at night So please stay near me 'til I'm sure I'm alright If I'm slipping away as day appears- stay near, stay near. From the start, it felt like you knew me well Songs we sang, and all the stories we'd tell I hear you playing; I can still see you smile My friends keep saying, "This will pass in awhile" If I'm losing the fight and night is here- stay near, stay near. Years from now the time we had will be there Such a gift, the kind I know I should share Your spirit whispers- "Right now I'm close to you" I hear it somehow; I know I'll make it through If I struggle and cry, stand by, speak clear- stay near, stay near.

The Hook 04:04
Begin with a phrase in a place it belongs It works well when simple and reasonably strong A nod at the title, don't say it outright Best save it for later, de-lay the de-light... Now here's the hook, a sweet refrain This is the part meant to stick in the brain Less than a song, but even so The hook is what lives on and on and it won't let go. Some songs will tell a story 'bout hopes or doubts or fears The folly and the glory, the days turning to years Yet in the search for meaning, no song can be a book The tunes that linger longest have people humming their hook. Here comes the hook, that sweet refrain This is the part meant to stick in the brain Less than a song, but even so The hook is what lives on and on and it won't let go. A twist and then the bridge goes from light into the dark When all is sung and done though, the hook is what leaves its mark. It's back the hook, one sweet refrain This is the part meant to stick in the brain Less than a song, but even so The hook is what lives on and on and it won't let go. The love that makes the heart sing, the loss that takes its toll The romance and the parting fuel songs that touch a soul Yet in the end both stories have been so often told The words can slip away but, a hook resists getting old. Enjoy the hook, the last refrain This is the part meant to stick in the brain Less than a song, but even so The hook is what lives on and on and it won't let go.

The day was clear, the sun was shining, the sky was bright and blue Then came the moment, your life beginning, and I looked down at you A moment of magic, it felt like a dream, though this one had come true The light of morning, and hearing my heartbeat, yes, everything seemed new. The night was cool, the stars were hiding, the moon was not in view And through the hours, ending your first day, the wonder grew and grew That day of wonder spilled into the next and when the week was through The music, laughter, the touch of a loved one, still everything seemed new My spirits rise with each new morn They soar, they fly! Through the eyes of my newborn. Now time goes by, a blessing each new day to feel the way I do No more a mystery, it's clear what happened, your life itself the clue The magic, wonder, the mystery and more, are mine because of you The warmth of smiles, the air in springtime The joy of a child, the scent of each tall pine Mine for awhile or here for a lifetime, now everything seems new.

Pun'kin 03:57
Had a tune inside my head for awhile A funky melody that lead me to smile When I realized it was a blues It lead me to the chords that I would choose As notes clunked around in the head, the intervals told me There's so much of Monk-in this why not call in 'Pun'kin? Soon I started funnin' 'round with rhymes And runnin' with the punnin' ones that I'd find Like "Have you seen a bed that's been de-bunked?" Which rhymed with several other lines I'd thunked And then when I reached the V chord, it finally sunk in The word that will rhyme just fine in this line is 'Pun'kin. Sunk into a funk; a verse still to do Realized the answer lies with the blues Sunk or funk? Repeat some words to complete 'Cause blues are known to be replete with repeats And now with the lyric complete, and sweet as a pumpkin The fun and the puns are done with this one called 'Pun'kin Had a tune inside my head for awhile A funky melody that lead me to smile When I realized it was a blues It lead me to the chords that I would choose As notes clunked around in the head, the intervals told me There's so much of Monk-in this why not call in 'Pun'kin?

The Muse 02:57
The sound that I hear is the song in my soul It sings in my ear and has me in control I never know how or when it will appear Exciting, inviting, and drawing me near. The muse is beside me and guides me along This magic inside me that never feels wrong Whenever it visits the message is clear Entrancing, romancing, and drawing me near. The spell takes a hold and it won't let me go Like waves in the ocean I'm part of the flow Soon I am traveling long on a path and I'm not sure where it leads or when I'll get back. The moment is gone and the cast is complete The taste lingers on with the ending still sweet Whatever passed through me, some part remains here Alarming, disarming, and drawing me near. The spell takes a hold and it won't let me go Like waves in the ocean I'm part of the flow Soon I am traveling long on a path and I'm not sure where it leads or when I'll get back. The muse is beside me and guides me along This magic inside me that never feels wrong Whenever it visits the message is clear Entrancing, romancing, and drawing me near. Exciting, inviting, and drawing me near Alarming, disarming, and drawing me near.

Without 02:38
Without your smile My world seems gray When you're not near me I can lose my way. Without your touch Life feels so cold As morning breaks through The day's already old. Don't ask me why Don't try to guess Don't understand Just let me confess. Without you here The clock stands still My days grow dark and Stay that way until... I'm with you not without.

Jump Street 03:18
From night to day the music plays away The saxophones a'singing and a'swinging They hop and bop until they stop to drop The trumpets just a'roaring and a'soaring It's the sound that people love to hear They come from far and near to cheer The melodies so high and clear You know you've reached the place they all call Jump Street. The sounds are cool and here there are no rules The syncopated is anticipated They'll start a chart but if it's got no heart They'll hypnotize you while they improvise through Every tune is a discovery The bass and drums weave a tapestry Rhythm, harmony, and melody Friends will meet and feel the beat at Jump Street. The bandstand jumps, the people grin Piano player takes a spin Guitar and vibes just hop right in There's magic in this music. The sun goes down and so begins the sound Jammin' and a'pickin' and a'kickin' The fun's not done 'til you see the sun The trick is try to stick the day's last lick in And when the time has come to quit They hit the lights but the crowd won't split One by one, bit by bit, they sit Don't leave your seats you'll miss the treats at Jump Street. about

Each of the eight songs here represents a different piece of the musical legacy I want to leave for my daughter Alison.

With the gift of her voice, Alison helped build this legacy. She gave all of these songs more attention and love than any reasonable father could expect. Because of her, Everything Is New.

about

Patrick Barton New Jersey

At the start of my eighth decade, the time is right for a collection of eight diverse songs, selected to feature my daughter's voice AND to represent each of my musical lives. In these tunes, I hope you'll hear the influence of each of the musical genres that have shaped me, beginning in 1963, when I realized how much music made life worth living. ... more
